The One-Derful! Collection: Midas Records

This one seems to have taken an eternity to finally make it out on CD. Highlights include "Beware, Beware" by The Compliments, "Destination" by The Epics And Larry And The Hippies, "I'll Take A Chance On You" by The Inspirations and "You're No good" by Irene Scott.

Diggin' For Soul

Picked this one up solely for The Carnations "Part Of Your Love". A couple of good tracks included here are "I Want To Get Married" by The Delicates and "I Gotta Sit Down And Cry" by Bobby Marchan.

Hi R&B And Soul

"She's My Woman" by Bobo Mr. Soul and "Hey Little Girl" by Norm West and the two top picks on this compilation.

The T.S.U. Toronados

"You're Mine" is the standout ballad on this release. Another track also worth a mention is "Got To Through To You". Balance are upbeat dance numbers.

The Motorcity Scrap Book, Detroit Soul 1960-1963

"I've Gotten Over You" by The Sonnettes was the draw for me on this CD. The balance is made up of common tracks and upbeat northern soul. The Sonnettes tracks is a solid 8 but have to give an over all rating.

Birth Of Soul Special Detroit Edition 1961-64

Latest addition the Birth Of Soul series from the good folks at Ace Records. As always sound quality is not an issue, plenty of liner notes too. Mainly northern soul but they always sprinkle in some tracks that appeal to the sweet soul seeker. Highlights include "I Cried For The Last Time" by The Sonnettes, "Devil In His Heart" by The Donays, "Don't You Know (How You Thrilled Me When You Kissed Me)" by Charmaine and "That's No Way To Spend My Time" by The Pen Etts.

The Detroit Girl Groups

Two killer tracks, "I Cried A Tear Over You" by Ruby And Her Swinging Rocks and "Love Me Now" by The Clevers made this a must have for me. Sound quality varies.

The Complete Tri-Phi Records Singles

The compilation has some very good material by Detroit area artists that is not readily available or over used on other compilations. Highlights include "She Loves Me" by Harvey And Group (The Spinners), "That's What Girls Are Made For", "Love (I'm So Glad) I Found You" by The Spinners, "Stay With Me" by The Challengers III, "Going Away" by Shorty Long, "Stop What You're Saying" and a beauty in "Do You See My Love For You Growing" by Johnny And Jack. Very good sound quality, recommended.

The Complete Harvey Records Singles

Highlights on this one include "I Thought", "Been A Long Time" and "My Love" by The Quails and "Will I Do" by Harvey & Ann. Instrumentals by Jr. Walker And The All Stars also make for good listening.

Super 60s soul

I picked this one up for the Debbie Dean track "A New Girl" and "The Vells "There He Is (At My Door)". The rest is pretty standard Motown, Mary Wells, The Miracles, The Downbeats, etc. Sound quality is good, lots of tracks and available for a low price.

The Five Dollars

"You Fool" and "That's The Way It Goes" are the two nice tracks featured in this early Detroit R&B release. Unless you dig bluesy, early R&B you can just skip this one.

The Sophomores Meet The Sultans

First time I listened to "Each Time I Hold You" it sounded nice enough to pick up this CD. Unfortunately the rest of the material is early R&B and I really could not get into it.

The Sentimentals Meet The Lucky Charms

Early R&B sounds that most will not appreciate. Highlights include "Wedding Bells" and "I'm A Fool Always" by The Sentimentals and "Potential So And So" by The Lucky Charms. Leave this one for the really hardcore doo wop fans.

Ronnie I's Lost Tapes

All re-sung material of some classic east coast doo wops. The sounds are good but I still prefer the original versions.

Philly Soul Girls

The title should have read Philly Pop Girls. The music here had a wider target than the soul fans. Nothing really that I can point out as a highlight.

The Emotions

A couple of OK tracks in "Echo" and "L-O-V-E". Nothing to get the lowrider crowd excited about but might be a different story back east. Sound quality varies.
